When you don’t have control let it go!

Last week I was having huge challenges with my outlook email program and for over 24 hours couldn’t send email or receive it through the usual channels. When running a business this can result in huge issues. Without professional help there was little I could do. This was out of my control. Thank god I learned many years ago, that if I don’t personally have control over something I need to make a choice to let it go. Life happens, no matter what. Getting stressed is not the answer.

This was not something I myself could resolve. Even my fabulous VA Mandi couldn’t resolve this one. I sat on the phone with the hosting company for what seemed like hours both Wednesday and Thursday. I was on hold at times, for as long as 15 minutes.

20 years ago, I didn’t have the patience I have today. I would not have been able to let go. I would have driven myself insane trying to make it work, got more and more irritated and stressed and then would still have to call someone to fix things.

These days, nothing is so important that I have to allow it to cause me stress or impatience. Instead I made a conscious decision that my business wouldn’t fall apart if I didn’t have email for a while, I could use the time to work on other things. It actually was a plus. I got a lot more achieved with this mindset, didn’t have to bother with email and never had a moment of stress.

I have a framed copy of the serenity prayer on the bookshelf in my office. I often use this to remind me about patience and control. Like the majority of people I’ve worked with over the past 25 years, I too come from a place where being in control and being perfect was almost part of my DNA. I’ve proven that this kind of thinking can be changed. For those of you who might not know the serenity prayer:

“God Grant Me the Serenity to Accept the Things I Cannot Change, the Courage to Change the Things I Can And the Wisdom to Know the Difference.”

Whether in your personal or professional life, remember that learning to be patient and letting go of control will help you to create a life that is more grounded and peaceful.

You are worthwhile

Sometimes we’re in the right place at the right time and that’s where I felt I was on Saturday. I attended the Los Angeles Chapter of National Speakers Association Conference in Palm Springs, which if you know where this is, you know it was hot, actually around 110 degrees. Thank God for air-conditioning.

I had the pleasure of listening to many wonderful speakers. However, what spoke most highly to me, was not just that they were successful or great speakers, they were great people. One in particular left a very vivid image on my mind.

I had the honor of being at a round table session with Robert Danzig, the head of the Hearst Corporation, Dean of Hearst Management Institute. I’m sure you know the company I mean. The most incredible quality about this man was his humility and authenticity. His story of success is quite remarkable. I can’t share it all here, however, I’d like to share with you something he spoke about. If you would like to know more about him, his books and work go to www.bobdanzig.com

This man was raised in the foster care system, no family, no comforts, no money, no nothing. When he was 11 yrs. old a social worker said to him, “you are worthwhile,” that was his first step in self worth. He stood on her shoulders. When he was 16 yrs. old, an office manager at his first job, (yes, 16. He did eventually attend college and received a fellowship to Stanford University,) said that she believed he was “full of promise.” That gave him the impetus to have ambition. He stood on her shoulders too.

He says; “seek out those who offer you their shoulders to stand on. Be open to people who offer to stand shoulder to shoulder with you if you are facing any kind of adversity. Welcome people who inspire you to keep going when you come across stones and boulders along your journey. The only requirement you need is to be the seeker – the willing vessel to allow others to be your source of strength.”

I’m in my 60’s and from my own life experiences I know that no matter what your background, race, religion, size, age, education or current situation, the only thing that can stop you from achieving what you want in life is yourself. You have as much inner courage and strength as you choose to use. You can do what Bob Danzig has done, if you so choose.

Time for New Beginnings

Here we are in September. The end of summer is near and I see this as a time for new beginnings. Labor Day is over, the kids go back to school, people are back from vacation and it’s time to ‘start’ thinking about next year’s intentions, goals and successes. Not including this month, there are 3 months left until the end of 2007 and it’s never too early to start planning.

When I talk about success, I’m not just talking about financial success. There are many different kinds of success. The word might mean different things to different people. I recently heard someone say, “Wealthy people have money but people with money are not necessarily wealthy.”

In my 60 plus years, I have certainly found this to be true. I’ve met many millionaires over the years who seem to have everything, yet they are not happy.

Although money and things often make life easier, they don’t necessarily make our lives better. Money doesn’t always create freedom. In fact, money is often used as a band-aid. Real freedom and success is created from within. Success is how you see it in your life, what it means to you, not what it means to someone else.

According to the dictionary the word Success means, “a favorable result that one has hoped for.”

I often ask new clients the following question, it tells me a lot about where they are coming from within. My request would be that you answer this one for yourself.

“What does success mean to me.”

Who are you surrounding yourself with?

There were a couple of interesting things I heard during the past week that I wanted to pass on to you to nudge your thinking.

I don’t spend time with people who are negative, people who are not generally happy or people who more often than not live in fear. I don’t want any of that negative energy around me.

I certainly don’t know everything, I learn just like everyone else and I continue to do so. I’ve been very fortunate and have surrounded myself with people who can teach me things I don’t know or help me to enhance things I have already learned.

Who are you surrounding yourself with? Do you surround yourself with people who inspire you, who laugh and are happy 90% of the time?

Do you really hear what people say? Not just listen to the words but really hear them or are you often anxiously waiting when someone is speaking, to tell your story and what’s going on in your life? Make a habit of really hearing when people speak. This will also help you to determine what kind of thinking they have and whether it’s bringing positive or negative energy into your energy field.

The other interesting thing I heard was from one of my mentors, Chris Howard who said, "Wealthy People have money, however people with money are not necessarily wealthy."

All of this adds up to becoming really consciously aware. Are you attracting positive energy and creating the life of your dreams?

Have a wonderful week and happy Labor Day.

Perseverance = Power

I went to see a great show last week, “Jersey Boys.” The Frankie Valli story. This was my era of music and it was really great entertainment with fabulous music that brought back lots of memories of my younger days. It also gave me another ‘Aha’ moment I didn’t expect in that setting. If you don’t give up, you really can achieve what you want. I would like so much to see everyone understanding this.

Often we hear about people who bring great pleasure to the world without ever knowing what their back story is. Frankie Valli’s story was very interesting.

To make it brief, he ran with a gang of really wild kids who had dealings with the mafia and got into crime and lots of mischief resulting in jail time. He could just as easily have taken that road. Instead he wanted more and became famous for giving pleasure instead of famous for being infamous.

Often when people want more and it’s too challenging they give up. Sometimes, without realizing it, they are on the brink of success and they stop. Why??

One of the reasons is they don’t want it badly enough. Sometimes it’s because they are really afraid they will fail and don’t believe in themselves sufficiently. It’s all about how you are thinking. I’ve said this many times before, change the way you think and you really can change your life.

That’s what Frankie Valli did. Never mind what challenges were thrown at him and there were many, he didn’t see giving up as an option. He was passionate about his music and loved what he did and that’s really all it takes.

Make sure you really love what you do and are passionate about it. Keep moving forward and although I can’t promise miracles, I do know that miracles can happen. You have the ability to achieve anything you want in life. Go out and make it happen.

Relationships. How do you handle yours?

The Law of Attraction and your astonishing mind works in all areas of life. It is especially powerful when you are connecting with other people.

Whether married, single, gay, straight, friends, colleagues, young or old, relationships play a very powerful part in creating success in life.

Of course, the most important relationship you can ever have is the one you have with yourself. When you feel really good about who you are and others see you as a confident, fulfilled person, you gain more respect and it makes you very attractive to the universe.

Relationships are part of life and life is about love and energy which, in turn, allows you to attract what you want into your life.

Even in the workplace. If you spend a good part of your life working with other people, creating good relationships with colleagues is of prime importance to your daily health.

If you find yourself arguing with someone and wanting to be right, let go. It’s a no win situation. Take a deep breath before you speak then act, don’t re-act. Always listen very carefully to what people are saying, don’t just hear their voice, listen to the words.

One of the ways to stop someone cold if they continually need to be right is to be the bigger of the two. Step back and say, “You’re right.” They have nowhere to go with it once you say that. As long as you know the truth about the given situation, you don’t have to be right. This applies whether it’s work, marriage, partnership or friendship.

When people continually argue that they are right, they have a great ‘need’ to be heard and it’s the only way they have of being in control.

Relationships honestly can make your days great or challenging. Also, remember that men and women think differently. There are no rights and wrongs just differences

That’s it ‘til next time.
Here to your success and brilliance

Which way are you looking?

"A life spent making mistakes is not only more honorable, but more useful than a life spent doing nothing." - George Bernard Shaw, 1856-1950

Sorry I wasn’t here last week. I got a big backlogged and it’s taken some time to get caught up.

Which way are you looking? If you’re only focused on what you don’t want and expect to get what you do want, it’s not possible. First of all, according to the Law of Attraction what we focus on expands, secondly it’s not possible to have positive thoughts if you are continually thinking negatively.

Thinking about what you don’t want is negative thinking. If you Visualize your dream life, focus on what you really do want in life, use some simple tools and of course take action, you will find money, success, good health, great relationships will flow into your life more easily and more effortlessly.

I’d request this week that you set yourself one positive intention at the beginning of each day, focus on only the positives and let the universe do it’s work.

As I’ve said before, it may not happen at the exact time that you want it. Instant gratification doesn’t usually work, however if you keep thinking this way, gradually you will find yourself attracting what you do want into your life.

Drop me a line and let me know how using the Law of Attraction is working for you.
